REINFORCEMENTS
STATEMENT

My Reinforcements series are drawings for imagined futuristic inventions inspired by the idea of a medieval torture machine “body enhancement” design that parodies current societal desires. I wanted the viewer to recognize the pain and discomfort of wearing the contraption, which at the same time seem functional and even advantageous.

Intentionally small to approximate the size of an advertisement in a catalog, the prices (e.g. $99,999, $159,999, &c.) listed on the satirical ads are very high and a dollar short of a round number, similar to car prices.

The cyanotype photographic process is the earliest form of architectural blueprint. This process is ideally suited to illustrate the futuristic designs for technological appendages since the apparatus is inspired by outdated science and medieval torture, and since the Reinforcements are designs for technology that don’t, but could, exist, a blueprint evokes the ideal cross between futuristic and historically dubious science.
